Microsoft has officially issued a warning to Windows 11 users after a newly discovered bug caused the password sign-in option to disappear from the lock screen. The issue has been linked to recent Windows 11 updates, specifically the August 2025 KB5064081 non-security preview update and later patches on versions 24H2 and 25H2.
What’s Causing the Missing Password Option?
According to Microsoft, the problem occurs when users have multiple authentication methods enabled on their device such as Windows Hello Face, Fingerprint, PIN, and a traditional password. The bug hides the password switching icon from the lock screen, preventing users from easily selecting the password login option.
While the password button seems to be missing, Microsoft confirmed that the password functionality itself has not been removed it’s only visually hidden, making the experience confusing for users.
The Temporary Workaround
Until Microsoft rolls out an official fix, users can still access password login using a hidden clickable area. Here’s how:
- Go to the Windows 11 lock screen.
- Move your cursor over the area where the password icon normally appears (typically near the PIN or Windows Hello option).
- As the mouse hovers over the invisible icon, it will reappear.
- Click the newly visible placeholder to open the password field and log in normally.
This workaround allows continued access without modifying system settings or uninstalling updates.
Microsoft’s Official Response
Microsoft has acknowledged the bug and documented it in its support pages. The company confirmed that engineers are actively working on a permanent fix, though no official timeline or update release has been announced.
Given that the impacted updates are preview releases, Microsoft is expected to include the fix in an upcoming cumulative update.
Should Users Be Concerned?
While the issue is inconvenient, it does not pose a security risk. The password option remains functional just hidden. Users who rely exclusively on passwords (with no PIN or biometric method) should still be able to sign in normally.
This glitch highlights how minor UI bugs can affect everyday usability, especially when authentication and accessibility are involved. If you’re experiencing this issue, use the temporary hover workaround and keep your device updated. Microsoft is expected to deploy a fix soon, restoring normal login functionality.
Stay tuned for updates as Microsoft rolls out the permanent patch.
