Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has announced plans to acquire World Labs, an artificial intelligence startup founded by prominent AI researcher Fei-Fei Li, in an all-stock deal valued at $8.2 billion. Announced on Monday, the acquisition will expand AMD’s presence in physical AI, an emerging technology focused on helping machines understand and interact with the real world.

The deal will give AMD access to World Labs’ research into spatial intelligence, which enables AI systems to understand three-dimensional environments, simulate physical interactions, and reason about real-world situations.

AMD Expands Its Physical AI Research

World Labs develops technology designed to improve how artificial intelligence understands physical environments. Its research could support applications in robotics, simulation, product design, and other real-world industries.

The acquisition also provides AMD with insights into emerging AI workloads, potentially helping the company develop future hardware, software, and computing systems.

AMD expects World Labs’ research to contribute to its technology roadmaps as demand for advanced AI infrastructure continues to grow.

Fei-Fei Li Highlights AMD Partnership

World Labs founder Fei-Fei Li highlighted the companies’ existing technical relationship and explained why the acquisition makes sense.

“We began a deep technical partnership with AMD last year, starting with model training and inference optimization on AMD GPUs,” Li said in a LinkedIn post.

She added, “As our teams worked together, we realized it would be a natural fit to bring together our AI ecosystem of software and hardware, foundation models, and applications.”

World Labs previously raised $1 billion in a funding round earlier this year, which included an investment from AMD.

Fei-Fei Li to Join AMD Leadership

Following the transaction, Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist. She will report directly to CEO Lisa Su.

Li is widely recognized for her contributions to computer vision and artificial intelligence research.

The acquisition is expected to close by the end of 2026.

What the Acquisition Means for AI

AMD’s $8.2 billion acquisition highlights growing industry interest in physical AI beyond traditional chatbots and generative AI applications.

By combining advanced AI research with semiconductor technology, AMD aims to strengthen its position in emerging workloads involving robotics, simulation, and intelligent systems.
