Anthropic CEO Predicts AI Could Cure Most Diseases in 5-10 Years

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei believes artificial intelligence could transform medicine and help humans cure most diseases within the next 5 to 10 years. His prediction highlights the growing expectations surrounding AI’s role in drug discovery, biology and medical research.

Amodei shared his views while responding on X to criticism that he focuses too heavily on the risks of AI. He argued that his message has always included both the risks and benefits of the technology.

“I do not agree that my messaging has been disproportionately negative. In fact, it has been about equally balanced between risks and benefits,” Amodei wrote.

AI Could Accelerate Medical Discoveries

Amodei pointed to his earlier essay, “Machines of Loving Grace,” where he described how advanced AI could improve human life. He said the essay was created because he felt the AI industry was not presenting an inspiring enough vision of how the technology could transform society.

A major focus of his argument is healthcare and biology. Amodei believes AI could do much more than analyze medical information. He envisions AI systems helping scientists perform, direct and improve many aspects of biological research.

“I am not talking about AI as merely a tool to analyze data. I’m talking about using AI to perform, direct, and improve upon nearly everything biologists do,” he wrote.

He estimates that powerful AI could potentially increase the speed of biological discoveries by 10 times, compressing decades of progress into just a few years.

“Thus, it’s my guess that powerful AI could at least 10x the rate of these discoveries, giving us the next 50-100 years of biological progress in 5-10 years.”

Amodei also has a personal reason for his interest in medical breakthroughs. He revealed that he lost his father to Hepatitis C before modern direct-acting antiviral treatments became available.

He highlighted sofosbuvir, a treatment that cures around 95% of patients, as an example of how medical breakthroughs can dramatically change outcomes.
