Anthropic is reportedly preparing for a public offering that could value the company at nearly $1 trillion. However, growing tensions with the US government may create significant challenges for its IPO plans.
According to recent reports, Anthropic has been blacklisted twice by federal authorities over national security concerns, raising questions about the future of its flagship AI products and long-term growth prospects.
The latest setback came after the US Commerce Department reportedly ordered restrictions on foreign nationals using Anthropic’s newest AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5. As a result, the company was forced to take both models offline.
The reported restrictions follow an earlier dispute over the military applications of Anthropic’s Claude AI platform. The US Department of War stated that it would no longer rely on a single AI provider and had already shifted at least two-thirds of its AI workflows away from Anthropic.
In an official statement shared on social media, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said: “Three months ago, [the Department of War] kicked Anthropic out of our building forever. Every passing day proves why that was the right move.”
The department also stated that it plans to equip personnel with “a diverse suite of AI capabilities to ensure they achieve true decision superiority.”
Analysts warn that unpredictable regulations could affect not only Anthropic but the broader AI industry. Experts believe aggressive government intervention may create a “chilling effect” on innovation, causing companies to delay or reconsider launching advanced AI models.
As Anthropic moves closer to its anticipated IPO, investors will closely watch how the company navigates regulatory risks and its increasingly complex relationship with Washington.
