The Chinese start-up Moonshot AI received approximately $2 billion from investors and reached an estimated value of almost $20 billion. This significant investment demonstrates the rapid rise in interest in open-source artificial intelligence models within the global technology industry.
Headquartered in Beijing, Moonshot AI rose to prominence because of the creation of its Kimi series of open-weight large language models. As the name suggests, these artificial intelligence models deliver superior efficiency at reduced operational expenses, which makes them very appealing to those seeking to utilize artificial intelligence more cost-effectively.
The investors who contributed to the fundraising round include Long-Z Investment, the venture capital fund of China’s dominant food delivery platform, Meituan. Other participants include China Mobile, Tsinghua Capital, and CPE Yuanfeng.
Moonshot AI has witnessed an immense rise in valuation in a very short period. Sources report that Moonshot AI had a valuation of around $4.3 billion at the end of 2025. Earlier in 2026, the company surpassed a $10 billion mark after raising a new series of funding amounting to $700 million. With this current funding round, the company has thus managed to raise $3.9 billion within six months.
Founded in 2023 by Yang Zhilin, who formerly worked as a researcher at Meta AI and Google Brain, Moonshot AI soon caught the attention of everyone after launching the Kimi K2.5 AI model, which became quite popular among programmers and developers for coding purposes.
The recently launched Kimi K2.6 AI model is presently among the most-used AI models on the OpenRouter platform. Sources reveal that the company surpassed the $200 million annual recurring revenue mark in April.
Moonshot AI is competing with other AI firms operating worldwide such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. Other competitors include the Chinese firms such as DeepSeek, Qwen from Alibaba, and Doubao from ByteDance.
The current funding round indicates that many investors are now betting on cheap and open-source AI systems amid stiff competition in the AI space.
