Fei-Fei Li is widely celebrated as the “Godmother of AI,” a title earned through her groundbreaking contributions to computer vision, machine learning, and the development of human-centered artificial intelligence. From co-creating one of the most influential datasets in AI history to building a billion-dollar startup, her journey is one of resilience, innovation, and global impact.

ImageNet: The Breakthrough That Changed AI Forever

Fei-Fei Li’s most notable contribution is ImageNet, a massive visual database containing more than 14 million labeled images spread across 22,000 categories. Launched in the late 2000s, it provided researchers with the high-quality training data needed to help computers “see” and recognize objects.

The ImageNet Large-Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC) became the gold standard for computer vision progress between 2010 and 2017. Its success accelerated the deep learning revolution, especially after the landmark 2012 breakthrough of AlexNet, which drastically improved image recognition accuracy. This project cemented Fei-Fei Li’s legacy as one of the key figures behind modern AI.

A Distinguished Career in Academia and Industry

Fei-Fei Li is the Sequoia Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University and the Founding Co-Director of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI (HAI). She previously directed the prestigious Stanford Artificial Intelligence Lab (SAIL), leading pioneering research in computer vision, deep learning, AI for healthcare, and robotic perception.

Her industry experience includes serving as Chief Scientist of AI/ML at Google Cloud and Vice President at Google during a sabbatical from Stanford. Academically, she holds a B.A. in Physics from Princeton University and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Caltech.

Building a $1 Billion AI Startup: World Labs

Today, Fei-Fei Li is the Co-founder and CEO of World Labs, an AI startup valued at over $1 billion. The company focuses on Spatial Intelligence, the next frontier of AI. Unlike language-only models, spatial intelligence aims to help AI systems understand and reason about the 3D physical world — enabling robots, machines, and digital systems to interact more naturally with their environments.

From Dry-Cleaning Shop to AI Trailblazer

Fei-Fei Li’s journey reflects remarkable resilience. After immigrating from China to the U.S. at age 15, her family opened a small dry-cleaning shop in New Jersey. She ran the shop for seven years, balancing business duties with academic ambitions. This experience strengthened her determination and curiosity, ultimately fueling her scientific success.

She also co-founded AI4ALL, a nonprofit promoting diversity and inclusion in AI, ensuring future innovators come from all backgrounds. Fei-Fei Li’s story is not only about transforming AI it’s about redefining what’s possible through hard work, vision, and humanity.
