Apple store employees in Italy went on strike on Friday as the company launched the new iPhone 18 Pro worldwide. The strike was organized over concerns about working conditions and staffing at Apple retail stores.

The unions Filcams CGIL, Fisascat CISL and Uiltucs said the strike would continue throughout the day, with protests planned outside some Apple stores.

In Milan, dozens of employees gathered outside Apple’s flagship glass-cube store. Workers waved union flags, used whistles and protested while customers waited to enter the store.

“For Apple as a company, image is very important,” said Nicholas Pezze, a Filcams CGIL union representative. He added that the iPhone launch was chosen as a visible day of protest.

More than 1,600 employees across 17 Apple stores were expected to be involved in the strike, according to Fisascat CISL.

Apple said its stores would continue operating normally during the protest.

“Our retail and online stores are open today, and we are excited to welcome our customers as usual,” an Apple spokesperson said.

The unions said iPhone launches create additional pressure for retail workers. Filcams CGIL said discussions with employees showed a “worsening in working conditions” and claimed there was not enough attention being given to employee well-being.

The unions are calling for more staff to be hired, permanent contracts for fixed-term workers and an option for part-time employees to work additional hours.

Apple defended its employee benefits and compensation.

The company said it was “proud to offer industry-leading compensation and benefits”, including private medical, dental and vision coverage, as well as mental health and wellness support.

The iPhone 18 Pro went on sale worldwide on Friday, with prices in Italy starting at €1,489. Apple also recently unveiled the Duo, its first foldable iPhone, which is scheduled to launch on October 23.
