Microsoft is facing a major market test as investors prepare for its latest earnings report. Options trading suggests the company’s market value could swing by roughly $190 billion after the results, highlighting growing concerns about whether its massive artificial intelligence (AI) investments are delivering strong returns.
Microsoft options imply a potential 6.6% move in the stock in either direction following its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings. That is significantly higher than the company’s average implied move of 4.8% over the past 12 earnings cycles, according to ORATS data.
The heightened expectations come as investors closely watch spending by major technology companies on AI infrastructure. Microsoft has invested heavily in data centers and AI services, particularly through its Azure cloud business.
Investors Want AI Results
The company’s fiscal third-quarter capital expenditure increased 49% year over year to $31.9 billion, although that was below the previous quarter’s $37.5 billion.
Investors now want evidence that Microsoft’s AI spending is translating into stronger cloud growth, enterprise adoption and demand for AI products.
Seth Hickle, chief investment officer at Mindset Wealth Management, said: “This earnings season is about AI execution, not AI enthusiasm.”
Peter Andersen, founder and CEO of Andersen Capital Management, added: “Investors have seen the AI spending. Now they want to see the receipts.”
Microsoft shares have fallen 18.7% this year, while the S&P 500 has gained 8.52%, increasing pressure on the company to deliver strong results.
Investors Still Bet on Microsoft
Despite concerns about AI spending, some investors remain bullish. A trader reportedly spent around $10.4 million on 20,000 Microsoft call options, betting the stock could rise above $450 by August.
The earnings report could therefore become an important test for Microsoft and the wider AI investment boom. Investors will closely watch Azure growth, AI adoption, capital spending and future guidance for signs that the company’s huge AI investments are beginning to generate meaningful returns.
