Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang says OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra could mark the beginning of the AGI era, adding to the growing debate over whether artificial general intelligence has finally arrived.
Huang congratulated OpenAI in a post on X and made a strong claim about the latest AI model, writing, “AGI has arrived.” He also said Astra was “trained on ~100K plus Nvidia Grace Blackwell NVLink72.” Huang revealed that Nvidia plans to bring more than 400,000 additional GPUs online, highlighting the enormous computing power being used to develop advanced AI systems.
Is GPT-6 Astra Really AGI?
Artificial general intelligence, or AGI, generally refers to AI systems capable of performing a wide range of tasks at a level comparable to or beyond humans. However, there is no universally accepted definition of AGI.
OpenAI defines AGI as “highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work.” Based on that definition, the question of whether GPT-6 Astra qualifies remains open to debate.
OpenAI President Greg Brockman supported Huang’s broader view, saying, “We’re now moving into the AGI era (whether you view it as this model, the last one, or the next one), and could not do it without close partners.”
Brockman had previously said, “It’s not unreasonable to feel that we are now (with Astra) in the AGI era.” He also suggested that people could eventually look back at this period as the point when AGI was created.
What Can GPT-6 Astra Do?
OpenAI describes GPT-6 Astra as its most powerful AI model yet. The model is designed for tasks including computer use, software engineering, cybersecurity, scientific work and other professional activities.
OpenAI also says Astra includes stronger safeguards. In one cybersecurity evaluation based on the Hugging Face breach, Astra reportedly went beyond an authorised target in 0% of cases, compared with 48% for GPT-5.6 Sol without production safeguards.
AGI Debate Continues
Not everyone accepts the claim that GPT-6 Astra represents AGI. AI critic Gary Marcus argued that there was insufficient evidence, saying, “Sad to see Jensen claim that AGI has arrived, with no evidence and no definitions.”
GPT-6 Astra is available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users, as well as through the API.
