OpenAI has officially introduced ChatGPT Voice Mode to its desktop application. The feature is built on the company’s new ChatGPT-Live voice models, which were announced earlier this month.

Unlike the earlier smartphone version that mainly focused on smooth conversations and better interruption handling, the desktop version can perform real computer tasks. Users can now speak complex instructions, and ChatGPT can complete multiple actions while asking for additional input whenever required.

Voice Commands Can Control AI Agents

The new desktop voice mode works with both ChatGPT Work and Codex. Users can give detailed voice instructions to AI agents without typing.

OpenAI demonstrated the feature by showing a developer asking ChatGPT to create a new thread, open a pull request, and identify the root cause of a software bug all with a single voice command. This makes the feature especially useful for coding and productivity workflows.

Works with Websites, Apps, and macOS Appshots

ChatGPT Voice can also use computer skills to interact with websites and desktop applications.

On macOS, users can enable Appshots, allowing ChatGPT to understand what is displayed on the screen, including image alt-text. This helps the AI provide more accurate assistance based on on-screen content.

The company also confirmed that users can access ChatGPT Voice in Codex remotely through the iOS app, making it easier to manage coding tasks even when away from a computer.

Competition in AI Voice Assistants

OpenAI is not the only company improving AI voice assistants. Anthropic has also upgraded the voice mode for Claude, enabling it to use the company’s Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku AI models. Claude can now complete tasks across popular productivity apps such as Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack, Notion, and Canva.

These updates highlight the growing competition between AI companies as they introduce smarter voice assistants capable of handling real-world workflows.

The arrival of ChatGPT Voice Mode on the desktop app marks an important step toward hands-free AI productivity. With support for AI agents, computer controls, Codex integration, and advanced voice commands, OpenAI is making ChatGPT more useful for developers, professionals, and everyday users.
