OpenAI is planning to integrate its AI video generator Sora directly with ChatGPT. It is considered to be one of the major strategies to improve and increase its capabilities.
Presently, ChatGPT has 920 million weekly active users. It is somewhat less than OpenAI’s target of 1 billion users. OpenAI is planning to integrate Sora with ChatGPT to increase its usage and provide users with new creative tools without requiring a separate application.
Why OpenAI Is Merging Sora with ChatGPT
One of the major reasons behind this is that there is less interest in using the Sora app. Since its launch in September 2025, its downloads have fallen by 45% by January 2026. Integrating it with ChatGPT may increase its usage.
Another major factor is that there is a lot of competition from Gemini and Veo, which is very close to Google’s ecosystem. OpenAI is trying to compete with it by providing its users with powerful video creation capabilities through its chat platform.
Controversy over OpenAI’s deal with the US Department of Defense has also affected its usage to a great extent. It is trying to regain its users’ trust by providing its users with new creative tools.
What the New Integration Will Offer
The integration is expected to provide users with the ability to create short videos directly in chat conversations, as is done with images currently. The tool will utilize Sora 2, which offers enhanced stability, reduced visual bugs, and “Extensions,” which enable users to resume or continue a current video scene.
Currently, users are able to create videos up to 60 seconds long. The latest feature also enables image-to-video generation. Sora Styles, such as a cinematic or vintage style, are also in the works from OpenAI to help users create videos easily.
