Early April saw Oracle ripple through Silicon Valley with sweeping job cuts. Nearly 30,000 roles disappeared across global offices after March bled into spring. That number hits close to nineteen out of every hundred workers on the payroll. Few expected such deep changes so fast – this shake-up stands among tech’s most dramatic shifts lately.
From one day to the next, India saw the sharpest drop between 12,000 and 15,000 roles lost in key cities such as Bangalore, Pune, and Hyderabad. Engineering teams felt it first, though cloud units, sales divisions, even human resources weren’t spared either.
The “6:00 AM Email”
The layoffs gained notoriety for the cold, automated nature of the notification. Many employees across the US, India, and Canada woke up to an email from “Oracle Leadership” at 6:00 AM local time informing them that their roles were eliminated effective immediately.
What the email said:
“After careful consideration of Oracle’s current business needs, we have made the decision to eliminate your role as part of a broader organizational change. As a result, today is your last working day.”
This approach drew criticism as many employees lost system access instantly, without a chance to speak to their teams. Despite the layoffs, Oracle is investing heavily in AI and cloud growth, including partnerships with OpenAI. The company is shifting focus toward future technologies, but the human impact of these sudden job cuts remains significant.
