President Donald Trump’s meeting with leading technology executives on Tuesday will focus on balancing artificial intelligence innovation with government oversight, according to House Speaker Mike Johnson. The discussion comes as Washington considers its role in regulating rapidly developing AI technology while protecting America’s competitive position against China.

Speaking to Fox Business Network on Monday, Johnson said the United States should avoid excessive regulations that could slow technological progress.

“We do not need a moratorium. We do not need to jump in and hyper-regulate this, because we’ll lose the race to China,” Johnson said.

He emphasized the importance of continued innovation while establishing appropriate safeguards.

“The innovation is important to continue, but we have to strike the right balance. That’s what the conversation is going to be about,” Johnson added.

Major Tech Leaders Expected at White House Meeting

The meeting will include several prominent technology executives, including Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI President Greg Brockman, and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai and xAI executive Elon Musk are also possible attendees, according to sources familiar with the discussions.

The meeting follows growing concerns about increasingly powerful AI systems, including potential safety risks, job losses, and the concentration of technological power among major companies.

Johnson Calls for Transparency and AI Oversight

Johnson said the government should remain mindful of safety without restricting technological development.

“I think there may be a role for the DOJ if things go awry. But what we need before we get to that stage is transparency, and we need some oversight,” he said during an interview with Fox Business.

Trump has emphasized maintaining America’s AI advantage over China while pointing to existing safeguards, including measures involving the Department of Justice.

Democrats Urge Stronger Government Action

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries called for greater government involvement in AI safety, highlighting Congress’s responsibility to protect Americans.

“So, when it comes to AI safety, it certainly seems to me that we need to actually lean in boldly and responsibly — now,” Jeffries told CNBC on Monday.

Meanwhile, Anthropic, OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Microsoft, and xAI have called for slowing certain AI developments and encouraging cooperation between governments. Trump also hosted Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei for dinner on Sunday.

Tuesday’s discussion could shape future conversations about federal AI oversight, corporate accountability, transparency, and safety protections while supporting continued technological innovation.
