Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has laid off approximately 500 workers from its data annotation team, marking a significant restructuring within the company. The affected employees, primarily generalist AI tutors responsible for labeling and categorizing data to train Grok, were informed of their termination via email on the evening of September 12. Their access to internal systems was revoked immediately, though they will continue to receive compensation through the end of their contracts or until November 30, 2025, whichever comes first.
